The multi-media-card (MMC) was developed by Siemens AG and Sandisk in 1997, which was the smallest memory card. The MMC had size of 32 × 24 × 1.5 mm. Its size was about that of a postage stamp. The MMC-card and SD card (Secure Digital Memory Card) are very much similar. The Secure Digital Memory Card is based on the MMC-card. Both of them have almost the same form factor, but the SD cards are slightly thicker and they have a write protection switch. The SD (Secure Digital) is a non-volatile, flash memory card format. SD-card was developed by SanDisk, Toshiba and Matsushita. SD cards are mostly used in handheld computers, digital cameras, GPS receivers, PDAs, video game consoles and mobile phones. There was need to develop a memory card that was small enough to meet the requirements of compact mobile phones. Therefore, the miniSD card was introduced by SanDisk Corporation in 2003. The mini SD-card also includes copyright protection. In order to make the mini-SD card compatible with standard SD-enabled products, the mini SDcard comes with an adapter. These memory cards are slim and compact. They are ideal for MPEG2 Video Recording. Mini SD cards have large capacity and fast access. The copyright protection technology used is the key for enabling a new distribution system for music and other commercial media.

The miniSD Card is a small form factor removable and portable memory device. It is used in digital cameras, MP3 players, mobile phones / cell phones, and many other gadgets. The SD Association in 2003, adopted mini-SD as an ultra small form extension to the SD card standard. The memory cards usually have miniSD adapter for the use in mobile phones. This adapter enables compatibility with all devices equipped with a standard SD Memory Card slot. The compatibility of the miniSD cards is universal regardless of its manufacturer. There is another form of SD-card which is called as microSD. The microSD card may be used in miniSD devices by using an adapter. On the other hand, miniSD cards can not be used in microSD devices.
